CJ Martha Koome Delivers Bad News To Mike Sonko And Ferdinand Waititu

Former governors Ferdinand Waititu and Mike Sonko

Chief Justice Martha Koome has finally commented on the ongoing debate of whether impeached governors should vie for office. Currently, Mike Sonko and Ferdinand Waititu are the only impeached governors in Kenya after courts lifted Wajir governor's impeachment.

Martha Koome during an interview by The Standard said an impeachment is like a sentence. He said impeachment is equivalence of someone being sentenced to jail for wrongdoing.

When asked if an impeached politician should be given reprieve as he seeks appeal, the chief justice disagreed. She said in justice system, a sentence is not lifted because someone has filed an appeal. A sentence can only be lifted if the appeal is successful or if the convict has served full term.

While CJ Martha Koome was speaking during an interview, her sentiments will form part of subsequent impeachment discourse. Some politicians have claimed the impeachment process is flawed and so someone should not be barred from vying on the basis of that. CJ Koome has outlined that there is legal process to follow if you feel you were wrongly impeached.
