Tanzanians have taken to social media with mixed reactions after lawmakers on Tuesday passed a Bill to amend various laws, among them laws on drugs.
The Tanzanian parliament passed a Bill that criminalizes possessing and using marijuana
Before the changes, the Drugs Act prohibited the use of hard drugs such as bhang, but the law did not categorically say the possession and use of the same was a criminal offence.
Miraa has also fallen under the same rule, where the use and possession of the same have been criminalized.
"Vifungu namba 15 na 15a vya sheria ya dawa za kulevya vinapendekezwa kurekebishwa ili kuongeza uzito wa bangi na mirungi anayoweza kukutwa nayo Mtu katika makosa yanayosikilizwa Mahakama Kuu, ya Hakimu Mkazi au ya Wilaya," Attorney General Prof. Kilangi said, which loosely translates to
(Sections 15 and 15a of the Drugs Act are proposed to be amended to increase the weight of cannabis and marijuana that a person may be found in an offence heard in the High Court, Resident Magistrate or District Court)
The new changes have sparked mixed reactions, with Tanzanians faulting their MPs for touching on bhnag
