Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, a former Member of Parliament from Laikipia North, has been sentenced to one year in prison for assault.Lempurkel was accused of assaulting current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere On November 21, 2016, in Harambee House in Nairobi.
"Lempurkel willfully and unlawfully assaulted Sarah Korere by slapping her on the left cheek and kicking her in the lower abdomen, thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm," some of the court documents read.
In her judgement, Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani condemned the former legislator to prison without the option of a fine.
Korere was allegedly assaulted by Lempurkel in 2016 at the office of the late former Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.
The court also warned that such actions which spikes Gender Based Violence should be stopped at all costs.
It added that the Lempurkel's imprisonment will serve as an example,to those who are assaulting women even though they might be having power.
