ODM party leader Raila Odinga has received a major boost in the race to statehouse following his installation as a Kuria elder on Thursday, January 20.

In the ceremony held at Kahuncha Stadium, coinciding with the Azimio la Umoja rally, elders from the minority community installed the former Prime minister as one of their own. The move is aimed at ensuring the presidential candidate consolidates as many votes as possible in the region ahead of the August polls. The Kuria community accounts for 25 per cent of the total 400,000 votes in Migori County as reported by The Star.

Speaking during the ceremony, Raila said the community has always been dear to him and that was why he led the 2013 democracy polls that saw both Dennitah Ghati and Wilfred Machage elected woman representative and senator respectively. He claimed that he will closely work with the community if elected, adding that they (Kuria) would play a crucial role in his government.

However, he castigated them for not being good neighbours after they elected another in recent times arguing that that didn't depict a good relationship as neighbours. Local leaders promised to work with Odinga this time and ensure he ascends to power.

This comes barely a week after Deputy President William Ruto made a tour in the region, holding several rallies in Kuria East and Kuria West constituencies in a bid to popularize his candidature in the same elections.
