Governors of at least three of the five counties in the region publicly endorsed Raila at a big gathering dubbed Azimio la Umoja in Garissa yesterday.
According to the nature of clan politics in the northern part and the backing from key leaders will give Raila a headstart.
Raila is also expected to meet mandera Governor Ali Roba today together with Mohamud Ali (Marsabit) who did not attend yesterday's meeting.
The two have formed their own political outfit and publicly differed with the Yatani brigade.
It's now clear that Raila is only opposed by Aden Duale former National assembly majority leader who backs Ruto' side.
In their resolutions that were read by former Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi, the leaders unanimously agreed to support Raila for the country's top job.
