King Drogba Leading Independence Celebrations

Today marked 61years of independence of the republic of Ivory Coast. In celebration, Chelsea legend uploaded a beautiful picture on his Twitter account to celebrate the independence day.

In his words King Drogba wished a happy independence to all of his fellow Ivorian brothers and sisters. Independence Day is a public holiday in the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) on August 7th.

This is the National Day of the Ivory Coast and commemorates full independence from France on this day in 1960.

Before the colonial age, most European contact with this part of West Africa was for trade in elephant ivory, which is how the region got its name.

Drogba is remembered by many Ivorian's when he helped stop the country's civil war back in 2004. By his famous words “Please lay down your weapons and hold elections, We want to have fun, so stop firing your guns!”

The words had a massive effect, eventually helping the two warring sides to the negotiating table where a ceasefire was signed.
