Hon Agnes Kavindu will be the new Machakos senator after winning the by-election held on 18th March. The top contenders were Agnes Kavindu of wiper party and Urbanus Muthama Ngengele of UDA party. The by-elections was very different from others held in recent days.First their was a very low turn out of voters. The by-election also didn't receive a huge media covering as expected due to the unexpected passing of Tanzanian president diverting coverage.
Despite this the low voter turnout has elicited debate on the potential reason and it's impact as we near 2022 general elections.According to IEBC official report only 21.16% of registered voters turned out. Some leaders have blamed this on the by-election being held on a working day. According to the winner Agnes Kavindu by-elections should be held on weekends. Some have also said this could be a sign of what to expect come 2022 General elections.
Kangundo Mp Fabian Muli has said this reflected what is the minds of common citizens. "This could be a sign of how leaders could have failed citizens making them lose trust in elections. They just vote and nothing changes. This low turnout should teach us alot before 2022".
Urbanus Ngengele who was a contestant while speaking to Citizen tv has said the huge police presence could have scared off voters. The police however were withdrawn earlier in the voting day.
