Ruto Trails Raila In Aden Duale's Backyard

Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale suffered a major setback after failing to counter the influence of Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga in his constituency.

In the provisional results as of Thursday morning, Odinga was ahead with 16, 718 votes to Ruto's 7,904 votes. After being tasked with delivering the UDA vote in the region, the former majority leader finds himself in a precarious position as a result of the provisional results.

Aside from the constituency level, early results showed Raila leading in Garissa County with 53, 431 votes, with Ruto trailing with 16, 172 votes.

Following the de-whipping, the former Majority Leader sided with Ruto, blaming his political difficulties on his devotion to the Deputy President. Duale has been instrumental in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) campaigns in the counties of the Northern Frontier District (NFD).

And currently, Aden Duale is in one of the most competitive races, with a slew of candidates from his Abdiwak clan vying to unseat him in a region where clanism is rife.

Former Garissa mayor and deputy ambassador to Pakistan Abdi Yare, ODM candidate Nasir Mohamed, and former deputy speaker Farah Maalim, who lost the senate seat in 2013 to the late Yussuf Haji, are among the candidates running against Duale.
