National Assembly and Senate to Pass BBI Bill Next Week then a Referendum in July or August-Orengo

Siaya Senator James Orengo has disclosed that Kenya will hold a referendum in the month of July or August, adding that the National assembly and Senate will pass BBI Bill next week, paving the way for the referendum.

The Siaya Senator maintained that Jubilee and ODM parties are committed to the realization of constitutional reforms and have expressed confidence that parliament will unanimously pass the BBI Bill due to their cordial working relationship birthed by the handshake.

He urged Kenyans to vote in support of the document which is the backbone of a united and prosperous Kenya envisaged by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

“The BBI bill be passed by the Senate and the National Assembly next week, then a referendum in July or August, I hope you will all vote in support when then time comes,” Orengo said.

His National Assembly Minority leader counterpart John Mbadi warned of ‘chaos’ in 2022 if the application of the proposed constituencies is delayed until 2027.

There are concerns that the referendum timeliness could be drastically affected by the cases pending in court, further throwing the application of the constituencies into disarray.

A delayed referendum would mean the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission would be unable to meet strict constitutional requirements on constituencies review.
