The political season is officially on in Kenya with all eyes on 2022 general elections slated for August 9th next year. Many politicians are fighting for their survival as MCAs, MPs, Governors, Senators and Women Representatives accross various counties in the country.
Some Governors are seeking re-election while other's are serving their final terms. Those seeking re-election include Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Mureithi and Nyandarua County boss Hon Francis Kimemia.
In Nakuru County, political storm has ensued since Senator Susan Kihika declared her interest in the county's top job. She intents to contest against current Governor Lee Kinyanjui in the 2022 general election. An opinion survey conducted online reveal that Susan Kihika who will be vying of th seat on United Democratic Alliance Party associated with Deputy President William Ruto will heavily defeat the incumbent Governor Kinyanjui. In the closed opinion poll which 629 people participated, 431 people representing 69% supported election of Kihika compared to only 31% who support the current Governor. Susan Kihika is fighting for Deputy President William Ruto to succeed President Uhuru in 2022.
Lee Kinyanjui belongs to the Jubilee Party and has been an ardent supporter of handshake and Uhuru Kenyatta's government simce being elected to office. He is among the four Mt Kenya Governors who have been recently popularising the candidature of Raila Odinga in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region. In 2013 elections, he unsuccessfully vied for the Nakuru gubernatorial seat, losing to Kinuthia Mbugua. He vied for the second time in 2017, trouncing then sitting Governor Kinuthia Mbugua in Jubilee Party primaries. In August of 2017, Lee Kinyanjui was elected as the second Nakuru Governor.
