CJ Koome Skips MPs’ Induction After Protests From Azimio

On September 19, Chief Justice Martha Koome chose not to attend the induction of MPs at Nairobi's Safari Park.

Koome was represented by Court of Appeal Judge Daniel Musinga and was scheduled to address the National Assembly members chosen in the recently completed elections.

She was scheduled to give a keynote address about the connections and dependencies between the judiciary and parliament.

Prior to the event, some parliamentarians affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition threatened to leave in protest of the Supreme Court's decision over the presidential election challenge.

The MPs charged a seven-judge panel chaired by Koome with prejudice in the decision that confirmed the election of William Ruto, the head of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, as Kenya's fifth president.

The MPs, led by Nyando politician Jared Okello, criticized Koome for the decision and asserted that Koome had failed to protect Kenya's constitution.
