The country's Judicial Service Commission is currently working out to identify the perfect person to occupy the seat of the chief justice. This week they have been doing vetting for the candidates whose names were approved.
The office of the president of the judicial arm of government requires alot the professionalism. However the former chief justice Maraga had set high standards for the office. He attained alot while in office. It was during his tenure that the country saw the indipendence of the judicial arm of government.
The next chief justice has a hard task ahead. The very first one will be to work with the head of state to approve the names of judges that have been pending for a very long period of time. Additionally he or she will have to fight for the indipendence of the judiciary. In the past we have witnessed the executive try to manipulate the judiciary.
Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia however has been seen to dominate the interviews. Many have predicted him as the perfect candidate to occupy the office of the chief justice. He is not new in the judicial field and has been seen to correctly answer questions from the commissioners during the vetting.
We keep our eyes on our next chief justice and how he will tackle the crisis between the judiciary and the executive and how he will uphold the indipendence of the judicial arm of government.
