With regard to the promise made by the ODM leader Raila Odinga to poor households, Vice President William Ruto has said that the unemployed Kenyans do not want freebies, but rather work.

Raila vowed to implement a social welfare program that will benefit at least 8 million people within a year of taking office if elected.

The former prime minister claimed that the program will aid in closing the country's poverty gap.

But DP Ruto said on Saturday that Kenyans, particularly the unemployed, are not interested in freebies but possibilities during a three-day trip of the coastal region.

“Namwamba bwana kitendawili karibu, karibu tuongeee mambo ya hustler, na mambo ya uchumi, lakini usituletee handout, hawa wakenya hawataki handout, hawa wakenya vijana wanataka kazi,” DP Ruto said.

“Hawa watu wote wakati tulianza huu mjadala tuliwaambia mjadala utabadilika, hata mtu ya kitendawili amekubali, leo anaongea lugha ya mahustler,” he added.

Don't pay taxes, Uhuru asks Kongowea Market traders

DP Ruto began his three-day vote-hunt in Mombasa's Kongowea market, Tudor and later held a public rally at Mombasa Posta grounds in Mombasa.

When he spoke at rallies, the DP took advantage of the opportunity to lash out at people he claimed of victimizing him, calling them all kinds of derogatory names in an effort to alienate the audience.

“Hawa watu wote wakati tulianza huu mjadala tuliwaambia mjadala utabadilika, hata mtu ya kitendawili amekubali, leo anaongea lugha ya mahustler,”

The DP claimed he helped opposition chief Raila Odinga become the Prime Minister and at the same time, helped Uhuru Kenyatta become Kenya’s fourth president.

“Si mimi nimesaidia rafiki yangu Uhuru Kenyatta akakuwa rais? Si wakati huo walikuwa wanasema mimi ni mtu mzuri sana?” the DP posed.

The narrative has shifted, according to the DP, and he is now the dark horse in the race to become the country's fifth president.

“Sasa vile nimesema nisaidie mama mboga, nisaidie mtu wa boda boda wamenza kunibandika majina, ati ooh Ruto si mzuri, ooh sijui Ruto ni mkora, ooh sijui Ruto ni mwizi, siku ile mimi nilikuwa nawasaidia wao nilikuwa mtu mzuri,” he added .

The DP described this as the height of pretence and political hypocrisy.

“Leo nawasaidia hawa wanyonge nimekuwa mkora, si hii ni utapeli.. hawa watu waache mchezo nanii… wakwende…” he added.

Ruto acknowledged that he was the target of a scheme by his rivals to torpedo his bid for the presidency, but he insisted that he had the power of the people behind him.

During his three-day trip to the coast, the Deputy President stopped in Taita Taveta, Kwale, and Kilifi.
