President Yoweri Museveni has directed the families of the former presidents to be paid 1 billion each as an appreciation of the role they played in developing the country, Nile Post reports.
The reports were verified by the State Minister for Public Service David Karubanga who told MPs that the directive was from the president.
Former presidential commissioners will also be benefitting from this where they will be paid 330 million Ugandan shillings each to the three of them. The presidential commissioners are those who governed the country between May to December 1980.
This was after MP for Rukungiri moving a motion compelling the government of Uganda to pay former presidential commissioners whom, the MP said, that are currently living miserable lives.
Among the families that will benefit are, Edward Mutesa II's family, Milton Obote's family, Paul Muwanga's family, Idd Amin's family, Yusuf Lule's family, Paulo Muwanga's family, and Gen. Titto Okello Lutwa's family. The family of Godfrey Binaisa will also be benefitting.
