Raila Threatens To Quit Presidential Race

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, has threatened to withdraw from the presidential campaign if his Nyanza backyard fails to register the required number of new voters.

He voiced fear that low voter registration could prevent him from gaining support in his strongholds. Following a similar push last year, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is conducting its second large voter registration drive.

Last year, the commission fell short of its goal due to reasons such as a lack of voter education. In Homa Bay, it registered 34, 203 new voters against a target of over 100,000. Other counties in Nyanza set a target of roughly 100,000 people, but only received about half of that.

Mr Odinga told his fans in Homa Bay town yesterday, after commissioning a Sh1.6 billion Belgian-funded water project, that if he does not receive enough support, he may decide to drop out of the race.

My opponents are registering voters in significant numbers because they are serious about the presidential election in 2022. I'm humiliated when I step out there since you don't seem to be taking this situation seriously.

"Would you like me to drop out of the race?" I don't see why I should enter a contest if you don't register in numbers. We must take this problem seriously and file a report "he stated
