The United Democratic Alliance party has released a press statement that has left Kenyans talking. This is after the arrest of two of their agents in Nyandarua County. The agents were to oversee the ongoing by-election in Rurii ward in Ol Kalou.
Brian Mbugua and Daniel Githinji were arrested this morning on 18th May 2021. According to the press release statement, the dual was arrested outside Rurii Polytechnic and taken to Ol Kalou police station. Their car was earlier detained and their phones confiscated by the same police.
The Secretary General of UDA, Veronica Maina, was very clear in the statement. She said that police have mounted unnecessary road blocks across the ward all aimed at intimidating voters.
In another polling station named Mugumoini, UDA agents were denied entry by police. The press release reported that strangers purporting to be UDA agents have taken charge.
The political party was not happy with this move which is linked to the Executive. In their statement they said that this is abuse of power by the Executive.
"It is unfortunate that 29 years after the first multi-party elections and 10 years after a progressive constitution which guarantee the rights of citizens to multi-party democracy, misguided agents of state are still using police to intimidate voters......Abuse of power by the Executive," read part of the statement.
The party urged voters not to be intimidated. They called them to come out in large numbers to vote and safeguard democracy.
The press release was shared on the party's official communication Twitter account. Immediately after it was posted, Kenyans joined in the discussion. Majority were against the move by police. Others were of the opinion that this is just a script by UDA. For the purpose of this article, allow me to sample only a few of their reactions below.
