Challenges Facing IEBC Emerge Ahead of August Polls that Could Affect the General Election

Constitutional experts led by Katiba Institute have raised alarm concerning IEBC. The experts say that the electoral body has breached the Constitution ahead of general election. Katiba Institute say that serious key issues affecting IEBC remain unresolved barely two months to the general election. According to the Katiba Institute the issues affecting IEBC risk the credibility of elections.

Seema Shah who is a constitutional expert indicates that there are flaws in IEBC's voter registration, voter identification, voting as well as results counting. Seeman further cited challenges with political parties' behaviour that could interfere with the independence of IEBC.

The constitutional experts have further argued that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has for the last general elections failed to follow constitutional standards. They have claimed that the electoral actors have been violating the Constitution.

The experts have also questioned the integrity of IEBC claiming that the commission is marred by opaqueness. They claim that IEBC hasn't met required threshold of integrity in all its processes. They added that the process of voter registration to casting of votes and the integrity of voters' register have seriously been marred by claims of incredibility in the past two general elections. They claimed that these serious challenges are yet to be addressed by the electoral body.

“These issues make it difficult for Kenya’s voter registration system and its register of voters to comply with constitutional standards of transparency and accountability.” the Constitutional experts said.
