President William Ruto yesterday once again raided Raila Odinga’s political bastion where he netted political leaders considered influential in the region, and who was the Opposition leader’s die-hards.
One of the leaders who decamped to join Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party is the former Chairperson Of The Board Of Directors Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) Hon Odoyo Owidi, a former close ally and diehard of Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement party. He was appointed under Gazette Notice number 2868.
Odoyo Owidi's change of political party came a few days after being appointed by President William Samoei to a lucrative and plum parastatal job on 10th March 2023. The head of state appointed him as the Chairperson of Board of Directors of the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 7 (3) of the State Corporations Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint ODOYO OWIDI to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, with effect from the 10th March 2023 up to 4th June 2023." stated the gazette notice released by President William Ruto.
After joining the party together with other politicians from Nyanza on 14th March 2023, they declared that they will work with President William Ruto's government despite threats from Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
Odoyo Owidi had previously resigned from the ODM party, citing lack of democracy in a letter to the ODM party secretary general Edwin Sifuna stating that his resignation was effective immediately. He argued the party, which was founded on strong principles of social democracy, has since degenerated into a one-man show.
