This is the first time that Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga will be on the ballot as his own man. After inheriting the seat from the late Wahome Gakuru in 2017, he is now battling for a fresh mandate come the Tuesday general election.
But Kahiga goes into the August 9 general election in a very bad shape- politically speaking. His deputy Caroline Karugu left him and had to settle for a new running mate.

In a region where President Uhuru Kenyatta enjoys a huge following, Kahiga will find the going tough as he tries to find a winning formula against Senator Ephraim Maina, a veteran in the game.
Known for his deeper pockets, Maina is riding on his financial muscle and President Kenyatta's backing to deny Kahiga a second term in office.
Running on a Jubilee Party ticket, the former Mathira MP is keen to ride on the Azimio la Umoja wave which has swept across the country to win the Nyeri Governor position.
As for Kahiga, his decision to ditch President Kenyatta for Deputy President William Ruto could end up backfiring, leaving him in an awkward political position going forward.

Going by the most recent opinion poll by Mizani Africa, Maina is leading the race for Nyeri County Governor with 40% of those interviewed backing his gubernatorial bid.
On the other hand, Kahiga is trailing the outgoing Senator witb 36% backing him for a second term.
Now a key Ruto foot soldier in the region that appears divided right at the middle between Uhuru and Ruto camps, Governor Kahiga faces a make or break moment. Will he defy all the odds to clinch a second term?
