In Raila's Nyanza area, president William Ruto unexpectedly received a warm welcome.
Herman Manyora, a political expert and longtime ally of Raila, questioned whether Raila was starting to lose control given the enthusiastic response.
However, a revelation by some of the senior regional leaders who served on the bench that helped the region get ready for Ruto's welcome has revealed the reason for the "new warm" welcome.
In order to discuss matters pertaining to Ruto's visit, a group of elected officials from the Nyanza area reportedly met with kingpin Raila Odinga on Wednesday.
The leaders decided to adjust their strategy after consulting Raila at the meeting. To accomplish two goals at once, they devised a plan.
Instead of ignoring Ruto's visit as they had in the past, the leaders chose, on Raila's advice, to embrace it and give him a warm welcome that he had never gotten before.
The idea was to take advantage of the chance—and the kind reception—to ask the head of state for assistance with development projects.
The leaders understood it would be impossible to gain the president's favor with such a frigid reception.
