LSK has denounced President Ruto's efforts to change the Constitution and called them unlawful. Ruto wants to resurrect the BBI route, according to LSK's claims.
Eric Theuri, president of the Law Society of Kenya, urged Moses Wetangula, speaker of the National Assembly, and lawmakers to veto the William Ruto plan in a speech delivered yesterday in Nairobi. Theuri claimed that because people are struggling with the high expense of life, altering the Constitution is not a top concern for the populace.
Eric Theuri further accused President William Ruto of reinstating BBI, which the Supreme Court had already ruled was illegal.
The amendments should not be implemented because they were proposed by the President in violation of the ruling in the BBI case, hence they should not be
The LSK's criticism on the constitutional amendment process comes days after Raila Odinga called out President Ruto for allegedly appropriating proposals from BBI as his own.
The Nominated Member of Parliament John Mbadi has also alleged that William Ruto's efforts to amend the constitution are strange as compared to that of the former president Uhuru Kenyatta. Uhuru had pushed for constitutional amendment at the end of his second term. Mbadi further alleged that Ruto could be testing the water before coming up with a more serious proposal.
"Ruto is barely six months in office and is starting to initiate a constitutional amendment. Maybe he is testing the water. Tomorrow he may come up with something else that he wants to amend the Constitution and remove the term limit of the President," John Mbadi alleged.
