President Ruto Under Pressure to Settle Ksh. 2.4 Billion Debt that Has Taken Too Long

President William Ruto is under immense pressure by Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers to settle a debt of Ksh. 2.4 billion. The farmers say that the move will be a great one in ensuring that sugarcane farmers are well taken care of.

Kenya’s sugar industry has about twelve out-grower companies and farmers want all of them to be taken care of. The farmers say that Ruto is so keen on privatising the sector by bringing in private partners but is not taking care of the interests of farmers who do the donkey work which the farmers do.

“We have not heard the President speak about the issue of farmers and this is worrying us so much. It is the farmers who ensure that the sugar companies run smoothly and they have not been paid their debt. We would like to ask President William Ruto to move with speed and pay our debt of Ksh. 2.4 billion,” the farmers have said.

According to the farmers, Ruto should also help sugarcane farmers like the tea and coffee farmers have been getting help in the past. They say a positive gesture from Ruto will be a motivation to them to continue growing more sugarcane.
