Professor Makau Mutua, a spokesperson for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, has said that he does not acknowledge President William Ruto as the leader of the nation.
Mutua reiterated that he would never recognize Ruto as the head of state in a widely read tweet.
"As a matter of my freedom of conscience and thought, I can't accept, or recognize, William Samoei Ruto as President of Kenya. I can't and won't," Makau wrote.
A few hours prior to Mutua's comments, Raila Odinga, leader of the coalition, had promised not to recognize Ruto, citing the fact that he was in power unlawfully as justification.
Additionally, he sought the resignation of the Kenya Kwanza government, claiming it lacked both the mandate and the capacity to rule.
The opposition leader and other leaders associated with the Azimio faction also urged Kenyans to oppose the Ruto-led government.
