This latest development comes after the country's health minister Chitalu Chilufya announced 85 new COVID-19 cases having also recorded 76 cases on Saturday 9th May,2020 all from Nakonde town which neighbors Tanzania.

The president directed that with effect from Monday 11th May, 2020; “the Nakonde border will be temporarily closed. There shall be no traffic in and out of Nakonde,” Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya announced at a COVID-19 press briefing on Sunday.

Zambia’s case stats as of today stands at 267 confirmed cases with 117 discharges and 7 deaths. Tanzania on the other hand has 509 cases, 21 deaths and 183 recoveries, according to John Hopkins University tallies.

The surge in cases especially in the northern town of Nakonde which neighbors Tanzania has been attributed to the free style approach adopted by Tanzania's John Pombe Magufuli.

Nakonde town has became an epicenter with Tanzania and its closure is a big blow to Magufuli's government's hope for continued economic free-flow with her Zambian neighbors.

This latest development no doubt leaves Tanzania in a no man's land in terms of trade relations even as other east African nations most notably continue to be warry of Tanzanian truck drivers entering their territories
