Vocal MP Who Serves With His Wife's Mother in Parliament, Both Elected in Different Constituencies

Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech made history in Kenya as the first man ever to serve in Parliament alongside his mother-in-law.

The legislator is married to Yvonne Chepkurui, the second daughter to Beatrice Kones, the incumbent MP representing Bomet East constituency.

The scenario is awkward as the National Assembly is known to be a chamber of rough discussions and confrontations which at time ends up in ugly scenes of word exchange and physical fights.

Nelson took over the position in 2017 winning via the Jubilee ticket. His mother-in-law joined the parliamentary politics in 2008 when she took over the position after the death of her husband. She was again reelected in 2017 via Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) ticket.

Nelson is a businessman majoring on real estate business while her mother in law is a teacher by profession.

The mother once served in the capacity of an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
