Meru residents have seemingly welcomed the candidature of Martha Karua at the expense of Rigathi Gachagua.Martha Karua comes from Kirinyaga while Gachagua comes from Nyeri county. Before, the Eastern side of Mount Kenya had been angling for the deputy post in both factions. However both William Ruto and Raila snubbed their sons.Ruto snubbed Kindiki even though it is said he was the MPs choice. For Azimio, they went for a woman.

In the Facebook polls released by Meru daily news website, the people prefer Martha at 57.02% over Gachagua who ranks second at 40.66.The preference of Martha Karua is directly proportional to voting for Raila Odinga as the two are on the same ticket.
Meru is said to be one one of those regions that is likely to vote overwhelmingly for Azimio. It is a likely swing vote as compared to the other counties. Also being that two of their sons are at the negotiating table in Azimio.
