Through a press release they shared on their social media platforms, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) notified the general public that the Kiagu ward by-election which was scheduled to take place on 14th October, 2021 has been suspended till further notice.
The decision came after the High Court of Kenya prohibited the commission from printing ballot papers until a case filed by in high court by aspirant, Milton Mwenda of Chama Cha Kazi which is associated with the Gatundu South lawmaker, Hon. Moses Kuria.
"The commission in compliance with the conservatory orders, shall not conduct the by-election for Kiagu ward scheduled for 14th of October untill the determination of the said case," the statement read in part.
According to the IEBC, the two aspirants, Milton Mwenda Kabobo of Chama Cha Cha Kazi and his counterpart and Nathan Gitonga of National Ordinary People Empowerment Union Party were disqualified because they failed to resign from public office within seven days after the declaration of vacancy for Kiagu ward.
The Chama Cha Kazi party leader Hon. Moses Kuria had protested the decision by the IEBC and assured his fans that they will do everything legally possible to ensure their candidate is allowed to contest.
