All along, politics appeared like an afterthought for Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja. After making a fortune as an industrialist, the Keroche Breweries owner appeared reluctant to embrace the muddy waters of politics.
All that time, she kept a very close family and personal relationship with ODM leader and former Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga.
When it was announced that Karanja was joining politics and that she was running for the Nakuru Senator position, to many people, it was obvious that she was contesting on an ODM party ticket. But they were all wrong!
Karanja made a surprise move when she joined the then Deputy President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance party. With UDA as her choice of a political vehicle, she was determined to take advantage of the political wave in the Rift Valley region to springboard her political ambitions.
Without too much work, she was handed the direct UDA party nominations. From there, it became very clear that the seat was hers to lose.
During the August 9 general election, Karanja was overwhelmingly elected as Nakuru County Senator. Her bold and smart move to ditch Raila for Ruto had paid off.
Today, Karanja is the Senate Deputy Majority leader. For someone who just a few months ago was politically shy, hers is a fairytale dream.
