Following the next general election 2022 August, the candidature positions for the members of parliaments and the county assembly members faced a great challenge after the amendment which was requiring all the potential candidates to be in possession of atleast degree and above for one to qualify for the above mentioned positions.
This amendment had been dismissed after the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen who supported that the candidates can vie as long as they may have other attributes of a leader apart from education.
Unfortunately the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has objected to the separation of of amendments by two Senators seeking to scrap a university degree requirement for Members of County Assembly (MCA) and Members of Parliament (MPs) positions.
Following the submission to the Senate’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, IEBC Chairman Chebukati has demanded that Parliament must provide some level of education qualification to enable the Commission uphold tenets of the Constitution.
He added that article 99 of the Constitution requires that candidates contesting in an election must satisfy educational requirements.
