In a region where defying President William Ruto is politically suicidal, Pokot South MP David Pkosing appeared headed to political oblivion when he made a surprise move to decamp from Ruto's side and back former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Having been in Parliament for two terms in the run up to the August 9 general election, Pkosing is one of the most experienced politicians in the region.
But his experience notwithstanding, he had made a huge political gamble which was threatening to sink him completely, never to recover again.
While vying on the Azimio la Umoja affiliate party, Kenya Union Party which is led by former West Pokot Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo, Pkosing was determined to upset the status quo in Rift Valley region politics.
Against a UDA party candidate, the legislator went into the battleground as an underdog. His decision to support Raila was clearly going to cost him his seat. But against all the odds, Pkosing pulled a surprise win as he clinched a third straight term in Parliament.
But how did he manage to survive the Ruto wave? Pkosing's political secret has been his good performance, both inside and outside Parliament. And riding on this, not even party affiliation was going to deny him in a place in the thirteenth Parliament.
