Ruto has for some time now been considered the favourite of the region, thanks to the good number of allies he has won over, but Raila seems to be catching up with the support of the region's elites.
This development appears to have caused concerns within the Ruto camp, whose members now say that they will not allow Raila to undo the progress the DP has made in the region over the years.
Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua told The Star that the plan is to once again endear Ruto to the electorate, especially youth and women groups. The plan, he says, is to promise 'Hutlers' business capital.
"The hustler movement is unstoppable. The DP has been part of Mt Kenya people for years now and over that period, he has endeared himself to the people, he has stood with us in times of need and participated in the development agenda of the region,” he said.
His remarks were echoed by his Kikuyu counterpart Kimani Ichung'wah, who also told area natives that the tycoons are not interested in their well being but their own interests.
He doubted the ability of these elites dictating how the region votes, saying that Mt Kenyans are never told how to vote, adding that the tycoons' endorsement of Raila will take him nowhere.
“The people of Mt Kenya know their leaders. They have never followed brokers. Even from our recent political history, you will notice there was the Central province development support group during the Nyayo regime that then metamorphosed into this so-called Mt Kenya Foundation,” he said.
Ruto is also on record dismissing the Mt Kenya Foundation, saying that its members are only out to protect their wealth and not to help Kenyans.
