Kenya is a sovereign nation that is guided by the new constitution of 2010. The country is devolved as national powers have been transferred to county governments.
Health sector that is under the leadership of Mutahi Kagwe as the cabinet secretary is devolved as the county governments manage the health affairs at the county level. The county government is in charge of hiring of the health workers such as the nurses and clinical officers.
Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) called a nation wide strike since last year demanding for better wages, risk allowances and insurance covers. The nurses in different counties have vowed not to resume their normal duties until the county governments listen to their demands.
It's bad news to Taita Taveta County nurses who have striked as the government has directed them to vacate the public houses with immediate effect. The county is under the leadership of Governor Granton Samboja.
Mr. Reuben Matolo the Secretary General of Nurses in Taita Taveta County has accused the government for making such decision during this hard time as the nurses have not received their salary in the recent months. Matolo added on saying they have been given a notice to vacate the government houses.
