Until May 29, former Cherangany MP Kipruto Arap Kirwa was close associate of the now President-elect, William Ruto. As the UDA deputy chairperson, the ex-Agriculture cabinet minister was central to the DP's State House bid.
Then suddenly, on May 29, 2022, Kipruto pulled a shocker when he decamped from Dr Ruto's axis and joined former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's Azimio la Umoja political formation. His decision came as a surprise.
At the time, there was a general feeling in the country that Raila stood a better chance to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Obviously, if Raila forms government, he was better placed to land a plum position in the Azimio la Umoja adminstration. But alas! Things never worked as he would have expected.
After the August 9 general election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati declared Dr Ruto as the winner of the presidential race. Now as President-elect, the DP is just a heartbeat away from the presidency.
As for Kipruto, having not contested for any elective position, he is set to spend another five years in the cold. But did he make a wrong political move to ditch Ruto for Raila in the last minute? Perhaps, at a personal level, the veteran politician must be regretting.
