In the countdown to Juja Constituency By-elections, the popularity of George Ndung'u Koimburi has been growing from strength to strength.
Little known George Ndung'u Koimburi (right) has become a household name in Kenyan politics.
The fact that the late Juja MP Francis Waititu Wakapee was a staunch Jubilee Party insider promoted the perception that Juja Constituency is a Jubilee Party stronghold. But the rigorous campaign mounted by Koimburi roping-in Gatundu South legislator Moses Kuria has catapulted the little-known politician with the less known Progressive Empowerment (PEP) Party to national fame.
Koimburi has borne the brunt of government harassment because of his association with Kuria who has turned out to be a critic of President Uhuru Kenyatta and an ally to deputy president William Samoei Ruto. Koimburi is not a newcomer in the region's politics as before decamping the Jubilee Party for PEP he has been one of Jubilee's most vocal advocates.
Juja Constituency although placed in Kiambu County is an annexation of the Nairobi Metropolis and a powerful hub for both local and international Investments. It has 114,761registered voters. It's a Constituency the ruling Jubilee Party would want to cling to dearly. And that's why Susan Njeri Waititu the Jubilee candidate has had some very unlikely luminaries in her campaign team including a powerful PS.
Susan Njeri is the widow of the late Juja MP Wakapee.
Voter turnout in the 2017 elections was eighty percent given the popularity of the Jubilee Party in the region. This turnout will be compromised in the by-election as Jubilee Party is still popular but Koimburi as a person commands an incredible following.
Should Koimburi lose in the Juja by-election he will squarely have to blame his association with Moses Kuria, a resident and voter of Gatundu South who has been seen to meddle with Juja politics.
