‘We need new thinking and action to give us the results we want;’ – Paul Kagame on migration

Rwandan President Paul, Kagame has offered some suggestions on the measures to be taken by both leadership and citizens to curb rapid migration by African youth to Europe. He made this remark whilst addressing an audience at the “Talking Africa Europe debate” held on Thursday, January 27.

The president identified some of the reasons for migration and added that, they could be genuine. “Some of them are justified, others are not, but they are either political, economic, security, all wrapped up on matters of governance.” He said.

He added that, “dangerous journeys continue to cause loss of lives and empower criminal network, we need new thinking and action to give us the results we want. To make progress, we must collectively diagnose the root cause of migration.”

Kagame was quoted by the New Times to have equally suggested that, good living standards across the continent could proffer a suitable solution. “Our starting point is that every young African should be able to lead a dignified, productive, and safe life on the African continent, whether in their home country or elsewhere in Africa.”

He advised the youth on their perception of employment, especially in the context of modern technology where one can reside on one continent and work on another. “It is no longer necessary to relocate to Europe in order to participate directly in the European labour market. Young Africans can do so from Africa with private-public technology investments that create jobs.”
