IEBC Voter Registration Days Extended

The High Court in Eldoret issued orders prohibiting the IEBC from ending the enhanced voter registration exercise.

A voter Patrick Cherono filed an application arguing that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission had not met its target of registering about six million new voters. The enhanced voter registration was set to end on November 2.

Voters have sued IEBC and Congress to get the committee's funds. Judge Eric O'Goal said Monday that the order is in effect until November 9, when the case will be heard.

Cherono went to court through her lawyer, Kairia Nabasenge. IEBC is expected to announce the final number of new voters gathered for its massive four-week voter registration campaign.

By the third weekend of the planned 6 million voters, there were only 80,462 new voters, according to the Democratic United Party. In particular, indifference of young people, lack of identity and lack of motivation were cited as reasons for the low turnout. There were 19.61 million registered voters in 2017.
