In the wake of a meeting between Luhya leaders, drawn from the pro-handshake faction, questions still remain why several leaders from the community from other political factions were missing. For starters, the meeting was attended by Kakamega Governor Oparanya, Vihiga Governor Otichillo among other leaders.
In the past, the Luhya community rallied behind the late Masinde Muliro and the late Vice President Wamalwa Kijana, but have in recent times failed to unite behind any of their candidates. Two Luhya leaders have expressed their interest in vying for the top seat next year, but none of them seem to out rightly inspire the support of the community. This includes Honourable Musalia Mudavadi and Dr Mukhisa Kituyi.
Honourable Raila Odinga and Dp Ruto still enjoy tremendous support in the Western region, and if Luhyas are to ever produce the President then they will need a leader, who can inspire them through value addition, championing for the rights and interests of the community, as well as empowering the Luhya people through sharing economic opportunities.
