President Uhuru Kenyatta Breaks His Silence Amid Upsurge Of Violence In The Country

President Uhuru Kenyatta stated on Monday that gender-based violence stifles women's potential in society and that the government will go to any length to eradicate the problem.

The President, speaking via video link at a conference titled Leveling The Playing Field: Gender Inclusivity, which is taking place at the Diani Reef Hotel in Kwale County, said the government had given resources and put in place measures to empower women.

Amina Mohamed, the Sports Cabinet Secretary, officially started the three-day conference and afterwards got a report from legendary athlete Catherine Ndereba, the head of the Gender Welfare and Equity in Sports Committee.

The meeting is being hosted in memory of Agnes Tirop, the 2015 World Cross Country Champion, who was found killed in her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet, on October 13 of last year. Ibrahim Rotich, her former lover and a suspect in the crime, is currently in police custody.

President Kenyatta is dedicated to empowering athletes by establishing the Sports Fund and giving financial incentives for Kenyan athletes who excel at major tournaments, according to CS Amina.
