Blow to Kenya Kwanza Coalition as Rigathi Gachagua Flagged as Unfit to Vie For Political Seat

Another big blow to Kenya Kwanza alliance is loading as its deputy presidential candidate Hon. Rigathe Gachagua now declared unfit to vie for any political seat in coming August general election.

According to National Integrity Alliance (NIA) of Kenya, approximately 25 politicians vying for different political seats are not legible due to various reasons like; Corruption cases, misuse of public office among others.

While addressing the media, National Integrity Alliance managing director affirmed the reports, saying the commission has already forwarded the names of 25 politicians who it says should be barred from contesting any seat in the 2022 general election.

National Integrity Alliance managing director goes on quoting the following articles in the constitution that indicates how a person declared unfit for any political seat in this republic:

(1) A person qualifies for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person--

(a) is a citizen by birth;

(b) is qualified to stand for election as a member of Parliament;

(c) is nominated by a political party, or is an independent candidate; and

(d) is nominated by not fewer than two thousand voters from each of most of the counties.

(2) A person is not qualified for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person--

(a) owes allegiance to a foreign state; or

(b) is a public officer, or is acting in any State or other public office.

(3) Clause (2) (b) shall not apply to--

(a) the President;

(b) the Deputy President; or

(c) a member of Parliament.

Among those fingered include William Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua, Governor Anne Waiguru, Babu Owino, and Aisha Jumwa.

“Some of these individuals in Red Card 2022 were also Red Carded in 2017. The list is presented in alphabetical order and not in order of the severity of offenses or cases,” the lobby group said

“Rigathi Gachagua was implicated in graft, resulting in action by the Assets and Recovery Authority freezing accounts with approximately Ksh200 million in unexplained assets,” he added.
