In Kenya, Kamiti Maximum Prison which is located in Nairobi city is one of the biggest prisons in the country. Kamiti prison sits on around 490 hectares of land (1200 acres). What a large prison! Like most prisons in the country, Kamiti Maximum prison is infamous due to poor conditions in it, in fact a number of prisoners lost their lives in the prison due to cholera outbreak which resulted from poor sanitation.
Moreover, according to analysis, Kamiti was built to house 1400 prisoners but currently it houses about 3600 prisoners, thus poor conditions.
However, during the time of president Kibaki, the prison was slightly improved. Thanks to the former president. In connection to that, there are a number of Kenyan politicians who were jailed in this prison for sometime. Their imprisonment was entirely due to some misunderstandings. Thus below are some of the prominent Kenyan politicians who served in Kamiti prison.
1. Hussein Onyango Obama.
2. Kenneth Matiba.
3. Raila Odinga.
4. Koigi wa Wamwere.
5. Ngugi wa Thiong'o
