PROFILE; Who Is Salva Kiir, The First Vice President of Sudan And 1st President of South Sudan?

Salva Kiir was born on 11th September 1951 in the Sudan Republic. When Sudan split into North Sudan and South Sudan on 9th July 2011, Salva Kiir attached himself to his fellow black melanin Africans in South Sudan.

He is from the pastoral Dinka community in Akon village in South Sudan. He is the 8th born in his family out of 9 children, 3 boys, and 6 girls.

Salva Kiir is a professional Army officer who first votes for Sudan Government in the 1960s, through Anyanya Military. During this period, he was a low-ranking military officer. However, he shifted to Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) during Sudan's second battalion war when Dr. John Garang openly ditched Sudan's administration to form a rebellion. He served as Dr. John Garang's deputy until he died in 2005.

The fight between the South Sudanese and the North Sudanese was brought out as a result of exclusivity by the Northerners led by President Omar Al Bashir. This led to a referendum that produce more than 98% of total votes in favor of the split of Sudan. Salva Kiir was leading the protest pushing for the split up of Sudan.

Salva Kiir took over the office of Vice President of the former Sudan government in 2005 30th July to 9th July 2011. He took over the Vice Presidency from his predecessor, John Garang, upon his death in 2005.

Salva Kiir made history by clinching the Presidential seat of South Sudan on 9th July 2011. Earlier on, Salva Kiir was the commander-in-chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), a position he still holds up to now.

President Salva Kiir has fought ups and downs since he rose to office in 2011. There was an attempted coup in 2012 which resulted in the rearrangement of the security personnel.

Moreover, his administration has been linked with the torture and killing of Journalists. He was accused of being responsible for the death of Moi Julius and Mohamed Musa.
