Powerful Figures Behind Kalonzo and Mudavadi Loss of Influence and Why

In Kenya though politics are supposed to be national first there is a local or tribal organisation before the organisations can converge to form a national outlook. This explains why there are regional kingpins in the country who have a lot of influence in their backyards.

Over the past ten or so years, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper has been the kingpin of Ukambani region with Wyclieffe Musalia Mudavadi being the defacto kingpin of the Western region.

On Kalonzo's part, his influence has started waning as evident in the recent Nguu/Masumba ward by elections where his candidate became distant third. Machakos governor Alfred Mutua, Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana and Kitui's Charity Ngilu are acting behind the scenes to have Kalonzo out, the three governors believe that Kalonzo though having presidential ambitions he cannot make it together with the other One Kenya Alliance principals.

Musalia Mudavadi is also finding a challenge in having the Western region speak in one voice. For instance Kakamega governor Wyclieffe Oparanya a strong ally of Baba Raila Odinga came out and assured Musalia that he is going nowhere because his popularity does not go beyond Western. Other forces against his ambitions are Vihiga governor Wilberforce Otchillo, Busia governor Sospeter Ojamong, Bungoma governor Wangamati and COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli who are all allies of Raila Odinga.
