Deputy President William Ruto currently stands out as one of the most popular presidential aspirant in the country. Although his popularity continues to grow with time, there are a number of mistakes and new political developments that may see the second in command lose his 2022 presidential bid.
To begin with, ODM Party leader Raila Odinga who is his main competitor is steadily growing his support in region which previously possed great resistance. For instance, a recent poll conducted by Mizani Africa revealed that Raila's popularity in Mt Kenya region has grown up to 26%. Although Ruto still dominates the region with 65% support, Raila might win a bigger share in the region.
According to political analysts, the ODM Party leader only requires 20% of Mt Kenya region votes to floor DP Ruto, a percentage which seemingly has achieved meaning he will probably floor the DP.
Secondly, Ruto is part of the failing Jubilee government. The DP was elected as a pair with President Uhuru Kenyatta and therefore the two are responsible for any goodness or misfortunes that come from their governance. People who seems tired with the current leadership might end up flashing out the whole Jubilee leadership including the DP in 2022 thus losing his bid.
Lastly, Ruto's campaign strategy might fail him terribly. He introduced the Hustler movement and resulted into giving Kenyans wheelbarrows as empowerment programs. Although the wheelbarrows are meant to symbolize hard work, majority have interpreted this as backward move which cannot solve the current problems. In addition, the DP introduced the bottom up economic model and most Kenyans are yet to understand what the whole issues entails. We have witnessed even some of his allies struggling to explain the model in layman's language, something which may eventually sabotage his 2022 ambitions.
