Angry Kisumu Traders Have Barricaded Kisumu - Busia Road

Kisumu residents leaving around Overcomers, Bandani all the way to Otonglo through airport were given notice to relocate to other areas. It is alleged that these residents were given very short notice of demolitions. On Saturday evening, I saw some of the residents demolishing their own building prior to demolitions by Kenya Railways Corporation. These buildings built along the old railway lines were finally demolished usiku by the KRC. These demolitions came immediately after Kibos demolitions that left a two year old dead and close to 3000 residence homeless.

The governor Kisumu County, professor Anyang Nyong'o yesterday addressed Kibos residents regarding the demolitions. From the news covered by Citizen TV, the governor said that Kenya Railways Corporation conducted the demolitions without their approval. He said that those affected by the demolitions with be relocated to other areas.

This morning, some traders have barricaded the Kisumu - Busia road because of ongoing demolitions at Otonglo. It alleged the structures are being demolished to pave way for the construction of new market in the area.

Late last year, the Kisumu County Governor, professor Anyang Nyong'o issued a notice stopping further demolitions affecting small scale traders within Kisumu County until the Uhuru market at Juakali is opened. Why are demolitions still going?
