Homa Bay Senator Hon. Peter Kaluma on Wednesday (January 11) listed 10 requests and concerns from residents in his backyard ahead of President William Ruto's visit.
Ruto is set to embark on an extensive tour of Luo Nyanza counties on Friday, January 13, 2023. Kaluma revealed in his statement that Ruto will be hosted by local leaders to present other needs to him.
"President Williams Ruto will visit Nyanza this Friday. He is very much welcome. Local leaders will be present to receive him and present the needs and concerns of the people," the statement read.
Kaluma, in his 10-point request, said residents needed to fund infrastructure and land expansion for Tom Mboya University and urged further acceleration of the Kabunde runway.
He further listed people's concerns, including Homa Bay Town's water supply and sewerage system, Homa Bay County's referral hospital elevator, Homa Bay Town Ward TVET, and Lake Victoria Bypass Construction. This will be Ruto's second visit to the Nyanza region since he took office in September 2022.
In late December 2022, Siaya Governor James Orengo hinted that he was willing to work with the administration of President William Ruto, but with conditions attached. Orengo felt that he would welcome Ruto if he visited Siaya but insisted that he would only support the movement if he avoided politicizing the development.
"The president is free to come to Siaya at any time, and if he comes to develop, I will receive him because the county and the national government are interdependent and must cooperate," he said.
"Talking about working with the government these days is not new, and those who claim to support the government to get development projects should understand what the Constitution says," added the county leader.
During a visit to Homabay in October, Ruto pledged to transform the fishing industry, the cotton sub-sector, and several infrastructure projects, including roads and water.
He also pledged to work with Nyanza and promised that no part of the country would be left behind. Ruto also dedicated an olive branch to leader Azimio Raila Odinga, saying he would take care of him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure they were respected.
