Details have leaked on the ongoings within Deputy President William Ruto's camp, as he prepares to pick his running mate for next year's presidential elections.
Ruto is yet to name his running mate and possible deputy, with details indicating that some of his allies have already began lobbying, hoping to be nominated for the lucrative position.
Details now show that things are getting hot in his camp, with some of those eyeing the post even using intimidation and threats to push their rivals aside.
“For now, people must stop threatening and crowding the DP to be nominated. Ruto is a national leader and people should let him serve the nation peacefully,” the lawmaker told People Daily on Wednesday.
This comes amid reports that those within the DP's camp, who hail from the Mt Kenya turf, have been pushing him to pick as person from the region as his running mate, if he is to secure its vote.
The suggestion has, however, been opposed by the others, who believe that the mountain has had its fair share of leadership since independence and the powerful post should go elsewhere.
They have picked Western Kenya, Upper Eastern and Coast as those that should be given the opportunity, stating that it is time "more deserving" regions were considered for the number two position.
“We must all sit down and agree on who will be Ruto’s running mate. We must pick someone who has the potential to become the next president. He or she must be acceptable and has the interests of the whole nation at heart,” said Washiali.
Ruto has also reportedly been warned that he risks failing to woo the other regions to support him, with his allies from outside Mt Kenya warning it will be hard to sell him in those regions if he goes back to Mt Kenya for his running mate.
