Is It Always About Sympathy Votes?

Kenya have been having many great leaders in the past years but unfortunately end up loosing their lives in different ways. Some have died through road accidents and some through illness.

According to the constitution of Kenya, a by-election must be conducted to fill the gap left behind by the deceased leader. In many cases of a by-election, Kenya has witnessed the endorsement of a family member to the deceased leader to replace them. The majority of these endorsed family members always emerge winners after the by-elections are done.

The following are some of the leaders who have succeeded their late family members to resume office duties:

1. Joyce Laboso (Late)

Joyce Cherono Abonyo served as the second governor of Bomet County from 2017 until her death on 29 July 2019 after succeedimg Hon. Isaac Ruto. Before being elected as the Bomet County governor she was a Member of Parliament representing Sotik Constituency. Joyce succeeded her sister, Lorna Laboso who died through a plane crash in 2008 when she was a Member of Parliament and an assistant minister in the office of the Vice President.

2. Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. succeeded his father through a by-election that was conducted in July 2013 after the death of his father Mutula Kilonzo. Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. is current current Senator of Makueni Coumty. He has never lost the seat since resuming the office duties and he is now serving his second term since his election in August 2017. He is also a member and vice chair of the Wiper Democratic Movement, Kenya.

3. Feisal Bader

Hon. Feisal Bader was sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Msambweni Constituency after winning the December 2020 by-elections after the seat was announced vacant because of the death of the previous MP Suleiman Dori. Feisal Bader was Suleiman Dori's nephew and personal assistant.

4. Imram Okoth

Bernard Imram Okoth succeeded his brother, Ken Okoth, to become the Kibra Constituency Member of Parliament in a hotly contented by-election that was held in in November 2019. This seat was declared vacant after Ken Okoth who was the Kibra Constituency Member of Parliament died after suffering from died from complications caused by colorectal cancer.

5. Ibrahim Abbas Ibrahim

Ibrahim Abbas Ibrahim became the Garissa County Senator after succeeding his father, Yusuf Haji, who died on 15 February 2021. There was a planned by-election but it never happened because other candidates stepped down leaving Abbas as the only candidate remaining. He was the later declared the new Carissa County Senator.
