Murang'a, like the rest of counties in Kenya will be going to the ballot to elect a governor in 2022. In majority of the counties, the Incumbent bosses will be seeking re-election.
Mwangi Wairia will be ineligible to contest next year after serving his two terms since 2013. He has announced his presidential ambitions in the forthcoming general election.
Dominant Politics Parties In 2022 Gubernatorial Contest
In Murang'a 2022 gubernatorial aspirants have announced their intentions to run on a number of political parties' tickets. They most dominant parties include United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which is associated with deputy president Dr William Ruto, the ruling party Jubilee and Wairia's Usawa Kwa Wote.
The Most Popular Party
The most popular political outfit in the county, so far, is UDA where the DP's formidable footsolders, among them Samson Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu MP), Alice Wahome (Kandara MP) and Irungu Kangata (current senator) are key members.
It resonates well with majority of the locals who support Dr Ruto's bottom-up economic approach.
Contenders In The Gubernatorial Race
There are several gubernatorial hopefuls who want to succeed Wairia in 2022. One woman is among the aspirants. She is the current Women Representative Sabina Chege. Others are men and they include former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, former Kigumo MP Jamlec Kamau and Irungu Kangata.
2 Individuals To Watch In The Contest
Although we are not sure of making an accurate prediction of the gubernatorial outcome, there are formidable politicians whose clout cannot be wished away due to the popularity they command. They are:
1) Irungu Kangata
The senator is among the most popular and likeable political leader in Murang'a. Due to his strong allegiance to Dr Ruto and his loyal membership to UDA, he becomes the politician with great potential. The public are watching him.
2). Jamlec Kamau
The Kigumo ex-MP was Wairia's fierce rival in 2017 Jubilee gubernatorial nominations. Although he was unsatisfied with the results after Wairia beat him, he is planning to make a strong comeback. He, too, is in the public's watch-list next year.
