Politics: Will clan politics play a major role in the Garissa gubernatorial race?

Garissa County is one of the most important counties to the national government and a gateway to the north-eastern region and the person who becomes the governor becomes an important person to the serving president. The county is currently headed by Hon. Ali Korane who won the seat in the 2017 election after dwarfing his predecessor Nadhif Jama.

As we all know as a country, clan politics in NE plays an important role in politics in this party of Kenya and without the blessings of the elders, you can't win an elective post. The four major clans are Aulihan, Samawathal, Abduwak, and Abdalla which play an integral part in the unity of this county that is semi-arid and facing major challenges. Some of the challenges in this county are drought, FGM, early marriages, illiteracy, insecurity, etc which any elected leader should find solutions on how to deal with the major problems.

Those who have shown interest in the seat are; incumbent Ali Korane, Nadhif Jama, Mohamed Shidiye, Dekow Mohamed, Ahmedsulub Haji, Habat Sheikh Abdi amongst others. This issue of clans choosing leaders for the people in the county has made some politicians not sit easy as they might be kicked out in the coming general elections.

All in all, it's up to Garissa residents to exercise their democratic right to choose their preferred county chief in the August general elections.
