The race to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta in the next poll is already gaining momentum with more focus going to the former PM Raila Odinga and Deputy president William Ruto. However, the One Kenya Alliance leaders including Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka have also ignited their efforts in bid to provide an alternative 'third force' away from the duo. With the constitution providing for the mandatory selection of a running mate by each candidate, the task for choosing a more suitable one lies ahead of them. Usually, they select them basing on regional balance and the amount of votes one can add in the voting basket. For DP Ruto,a running mate from the central region is becoming inevitable. After the fall out with president Uhuru, the mountain vote has become so slippery to Ruto raising doubts on if they will support him. The only option remaining for him is to entice the region with the deputy slot.
However,it remains unclear on who he may settle on. Most of the political bigwigs from the region have deserted him infavour of Raila and some taking a neutral position. He has only managed to consolidate the support of most of the region's legislators who might not have enough experience and clout to deputies him.He has also been isolated with other national figures from other regions hence complicating his arithmetics further. For instance, Kalonzo, Mudavadi,Joho and Oparanya who may be perceived as suitable running mates considering their sizable support from their regions have been noncommittal to work with him.
In a rejoinder,DP Ruto has also ruled out any possibility of working with them and maintained that he will not participate in coalitions based on tribal formations. Some of them including Joho and Oparanya have shown interest in working with Raila hence willing to deputies him if given the chance. This puts Raila in a more advantageous position of finding his running mate. With President Uhuru's efforts to unite Musalia, Kalonzo and Raila,it will also be possible for the former premier to get his deputy once they agree to unite. The two have shown interest in working with him despite their earlier pronouncements. KANU's Gideon Moi who is also one of them in the OKA coalition is also perceived to be opting for Raila as the best bet.
